Text chat API

Postby fernando.martinelli » Sun Feb 05, 2012 6:23 am

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if OpenTok also makes available a simple solution for text chatting as it does for video-chatting. What I wanted is something very similar to skype, where users chat on video but can also submit text messages which is useful for sending website links etc.

It would be great if we would have to program that from scratch.

Thanks a lot!
Fernando

Hi Fernando,

While we don't have an API explicitly for text-chat, you could perhaps use our stateManager class to build your own: http://www.tokbox.com/opentok/api/tools ... nager.html.

The stateManager class allows you to set data in the form of key-value pair on a session. Anytime a new key value is set, everybody in the session gets an event with the update key value. In theory, you could use this to build a text chat relatively quickly.

That's interesting Jon, thanks a lot!

But what if I only needed a chat between two people, would you know about any faster and simpler solutions than for multiple participants?

Thanks again,
Fernando

Hey Fernando,

The solution that I proposed would also work for 2 person chats. However, if you want more complete, drop-in text chats you can check out http://wompt.com/ or http://envolve.com.

Hello - looks like you found the right thread:

I too would love to see this text chat functionality come standard with tokbox. Hence if video is not supported, or if users prefer not to use video, then text is the way to go.

Doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles, as long as a text chat room can be easily created for two or more users, it will do.

OK, well I may be a little off beat here but I thought maybe my input (2cents) would help ;) (after all it's nice to give back, if you can, to a community that helps you)

1) phpchat (free) http://www.phpfreechat.net/
2) ajaxChat (free) https://blueimp.net/ajax/
or my prefered:
3) Code your own, JS, Ajax and PHP/MySQL

Currently I use 3 (which look bad) but we did have a look at dropping it and using ajaxChat instead.
ajaxChat certainly was setup nicer than my home-made solution, but we didn't have the control that we wanted so we continued the home-made solution.

and as a closer, although it's even further off topic and may not be what anyone wants:
a 'bot' / Artificial Intelegence if you wanted to incorporate it into your chat once you got your chat going: http://blog.program-o.com/
(It won't pass off as a human unless you do HEAPS of work, but it makes a fun textual play-thing for your chat's members.

Once I finally pickup where I left off and get tokbox happening again and integrated i'll happily share with you how I incorporated the text chat side of things with the usage of the cam and audio side of tokbox.

Hi,

Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that the StateManager API isn't supported in the iOS SDK?

Best,

You are correct. The state manager is not available in the iOS SDK. You would have to use pusher or something similar to achieve something like the state manager for iOS.
